Are Curfews Effective for Teen Safety or Too Restrictive?

Curfews are very commonly used for teens in households all around the world. They are meant to ensure that teens are well rested and safe, however, it is debated that curfews can be too restrictive. One reason as to why curfews are effective is because they keep teenagers safe. Most juvenile crime and arrests occur during the night. A study recognized by the US Department of Justice shows that curfews have been associated with a 29% reduction towards teen arrests along with a decrease in violent crimes against teens. At night, teens can tend to be loud and disruptive, which can lead to disturbances and loss of sleep for the neighbors and the surrounding town. A teen curfew would not just positively impact teenagers, but also family members, neighbors, and other people in the town. As said by Mr. Olivencia, father of two kids, “I love curfews. I’m a fan of curfews. The sooner you are home, the better.” This demonstrates the importance of curfews to parents. Building onto this idea, parents have busy lives, so their kids staying out late results in them staying up late, waiting for their kids to return, when all they want is to get rest for the next day.

Another reason why curfews are beneficial is that they ensure teens can get their needed rest. Sleeping is extremely important, especially as a teenager. It helps your body grow, supports vital brain development, and helps manage stress. It also helps improve attention span and school performance. Using a curfew allows for teens to have fun and spend time with friends while also ensuring healthy physical and mental growth.

Although there are plenty of health benefits to curfews, teens believe them to be too restrictive. When asked for his option on curfews, 9th grader William Hirsh stated, “I think that curfews promote teen dependence and taking them out would make teens more independent and give them a chance to show their maturity.” An important part of being a teenager is learning how to be more independent and making their own decisions. By using a curfew, teens are restricted from acting independently and gaining experience with decision making. Even if it is simply choosing what time to go home, it is still important as it is a way that teens can show maturity and prepare themselves for adulthood. They can also prevent teens from developing essential social skills and making memories with friends. Lastly, curfews often backfire, resulting in the development of bad traits such as teen defiance and rebellion.
