What do this season’s fall drama and spring musical have in common? Surprisingly, it’s an intense murder case. Chicago tells the story of Roxie Hart, a woman who killed the man she was having an affair with, and Velma Kelly, who killed her husband upon finding out that he cheated. Both women seek the help of renowned lawyer Billy Flynn, content to watch him pull strings and get them out of jail. As Roxie and Velma vie for acquittal, they spiral into direct competition, each one racing toward the nearest headline, sometimes going to extreme lengths to get there. Chicago features music by John Kander, with Lyrics and Book by Fred Ebb and Bob Fosse. Bob Fosse, known for his distinct style of dance choreography, choreographed many famous musicals such as Chicago and Pippin, yet another Blind Brook theater pipeline. Blind Brook’s production of Chicago is undoubtedly living up to the show’s glamorous reputation, featuring a large, talented cast, stunning set and costumes, as well as an all-star band, playing live music throughout the show.
After speaking with Student Assistant Director Joley Meron, we asked a few questions regarding some of the things that have been challenging, what she hopes audiences take away from the show, and why people should come see Chicago. “The most challenging part of putting together Chicago has probably been all the snow days,” she says. “It’s very important to stick to a certain schedule in terms of rehearsal because by the time we get to a week or a week and a half before the show we’re supposed to be at a certain point.” The recent delays and weather conditions have become conflicts in rehearsal schedule, but nothing stops the team of talented actors and behind- the- scenes roles. “We hope the audience takes away the fact that the cast put so much hard work into it. We hope this is fun entertainment for the audience and it makes them want to see more Blind Brook shows.” Over the years Blind Brook is notorious for having outstanding performances. Part of the culture is for everyone to put forth their best effort so the years to come receive that same sense of pride when producing a show, and getting that same effort back from the support of the audience. Lastly, we asked Joley why people should come to Chicago: “It is a very well put together show, and it is so much fun to watch. It has such an interesting plot that’s easily followed, and the music is super amazing. There is such a vibe to experience this show, so everyone should come see this talented group of Blind Brook students in action!” There is no doubt that the Blind Brook theater production team will amaze once again, so get ready to be dazzled this March!
