When was the last time the United States passed prison reform laws? On December 19th, the Senate voted to enact new prison reform laws, with many seeing this as a topic long overdue. So how does this new legislation affect the United States?
At the time being, the United States has the highest population that is incarcerated in the world with just over 2 million people being incarcerated.
That is roughly 1% of the United States adult population. Additionally, the United States has the highest incarceration rate per capita in the world. These stats are all very alarming to the American population and therefore, the American Senate. For these reasons, they proposed a the new “First Step Act” as means of helping to solve this problem.
