The Blind Brook High School girls varsity soccer team has had a remarkable 2024 season, showcasing talent, teamwork, and resilience. Early in the season, the Trojans built a strong foundation with a five-game winning streak, including key victories such as their 2-0 win over North Salem. Their success carried into the playoffs, where they made strides towards the final with a 2-0 victory against Valhalla in the quarter-finals, fueled by two goals from sophomore striker Lola Gonzalez. This win highlighted their capability to excel under pressure and set the stage for further postseason achievements. The team then advanced to the semi-finals in section playoffs, where they played 110 minutes of soccer, ending in penalty kicks, but were ultimately defeated.
As a senior who has played on this team for four years, I couldn’t have hoped for a better season. In all four seasons of playing on this team, this is the farthest we have made it into sectionals. Although we would have loved to have reached the section finals, it was an honor to play with the girls on this team for each and every game—win, loss, and tie alike. Junior goalie Bella Monestano, who transitioned from starting center back to starting goalkeeper during the season, was pivotal to the team’s success. Bella reflected, “Switching from field player to goalie changes more than just your role—it changes your connection to the team. You see the whole game in front of you and feel a different kind of responsibility. The first time I played goalie during a game I was nervous. It was challenging stepping into such a crucial role. Over time, I became more and more comfortable, and loved the rush of adrenaline I got from being in the box.”
The Trojans’ coaching staff deserve extraordinary recognition, along with the players, for creating a competitive yet cohesive environment. Their tactical adjustments and emphasis on player development have been instrumental in transforming the team into playoff contenders. The usage of many different formations throughout the season contributed to the team’s triumphs over various competitors. This season also showcased strong dedication to winning and adaptability among the players, who thrived against tough competitors in the league and section. The team finished as the first seed in Class B with a record of 11 wins, 4 loses and 1 tie and second in the league with a record of 6 wins, 3 losses and 1 tie. The team’s consistent performance and standout individual contributions are a testament to their dedication and growth throughout the season, cementing Blind Brook as a formidable force in their league and section going forward into the 2025 season.
